What is PageRank?

At its most simple, PageRank is a mark from 1 to 10, of how important Google thinks a page is. Google calculates the importance of a page based on how many other pages link to that page, and the importance of those pages, based on how many pages are linking to them.

For example, if 10,000 pages all link to one page on the web, Google is going to consider that page important, and will probably assign it a PR5. But if only 10 pages link to a page, it will be considerably less important, and would be lucky to acheive a PR1.

But when that PR5 page links to your page, it carries with it the weight of those 10,000 backlinks, and therefore passes 1000x more PageRank than the PR1 site, which only carries the weight of 10 backlinks. So one link from a PR5 page carries as much importance as 1,000 links from PR1 pages.
